Queen’s first Thanksgiving

(Queen and cousin Olivia - I realize this picture is slightly confusing)

As tiring as it can be, I love spending time with my two middle school side kicks, Queen and Jessica. Jessica reminds me that it’s Miley Cyrus’s birthday, teaches me the latest dance moves, and laments over the annoying things her sister has done. “Let’s just sit and talk” is always her response when I ask what she wants to do. I am privileged to be her confidant. Queen grew up in a refugee camp, has a daughter Addie’s age, loves WWE Raw, and always has a smile on her face. The two girls couldn’t be any different, but love spending time together. Last night Queen reminded me that tomorrow, November 25th, will be her one year anniversary of coming to the United States. She reminisced about her friend doing her hair the night before she left Africa, the looong plane ride with a 5 month old baby, and being greeted by her Aunt and church members at the airport. She said her first big meal was Thanksgiving dinner and her belly has never been so full. “Let’s do something to celebrate” she tells me. Queen’s story is helping my little American mind stretch beyond pumpkin pie and handprints decorated as turkeys this Thanksgiving. Now I need to try to think of something besides my default to cupcakes to help her celebrate tomorrow…
